The Dangerous Brother: Fraternity's Journey to East Asia

SUN Jiang


“Fraternity” means “brotherly love,” and can also mean “friendship”. When this concept traveled to China and Japan in the 19th century with the French Revolution’s three slogans, a strange translation problem appeared. At first, both “brotherly love”（兄弟爱） and “universal love”（博爱） were used. Later, “universal love” won out, and the original meaning of “brotherly love” was lost. Professor Sun Jiang will compare China with the West, and China with Japan. Through this translation example, he will think about how to study cross-language and cross-cultural concepts in history.
