Hot Springs, Medical Pilgrimage and Popular Cults in Modern China
Hot springs serve as an excellent example to elaborate the relation between the environment and local society. Ever since the imperial period, various actors have employed hot springs as a water source for daily supplement, agricultural use, medical treatment, spiritual power and cultural appreciation.
This talk will focus on the aspect of medical pilgrimage and popular cults towards the hot springs. They were considered the holy water to cure the so called “hundreds diseases” in modern China. During the transition period from the traditional society to a modern nation, the motivation to seek the holy medical hot springs was complex. Hot springs therefore embodied the complexity of landscape representation and construction, medical knowledge and practice, as well sensory experience and imagination on the body.
