What we can learn about China by Studying its 20th Century Opera
Prof. Chabrowski discusses his research about the transformation of the Sichuan opera. This period covers its historical development from the 18th century, across its transformation into a commercial entertainment during the Republic, and down to its nationalization by the Chinese Communist Party.
Chinese regional opera will be examined both as an art as well as a social institution going through social, legal, religious, political and economic change. This approach turns it into a tool for reading historical processes that took place on multiple social, geographic and cultural levels.
