Rethinking Religious Textuality in Ming Literature
The Chinese book market saw dramatic transformations during the Ming dynasty. Authors explored new themes and modes of writing, while commercial publishers experimented with new printing formats. This era also marks an important milestone in the circulation of religious texts beyond the elites and institutionalized religious circles. Canonical scriptures, liturgies, ritual manuals, and even news about local religious affairs were incorporated into novels and short-story anthologies. This talk examines the conflation of religious and literary textuality in Ming book culture, raises questions about reading habits, and highlights the role of commercial publishers as cultural agents that shaped popular religious practice.
